Somewhere between Noise and Silence // Transnational Records
There is something quitly subversive about the music of War San, the solo project of Swedish composer Kim Warsén. It inhabits the territory of ambient, experimental composition and new classic, but rarely behaves as any of these genres are expected to.
Melodies appear and dissolve, instruments seem to carry memories of their own, and seemingly peacyful soundscapes reveal unexpected darkness beneath the surface.

Across a growing catalogue of releases, Warsén has developed a distinctly personal approach to composition and production. Part ritual, part sonic excavation, his records seem to operate according to their own internal logic.
Old pianos, harmoniums, synthesizers, unconventional percussion, degraded recordings and fragments of voices are assembled into compositions that feel simultaneously intimate and strangely unfamiliar. There is an almost tactile quality to the sound: wood, dust, air, friction and resonance. Imperfections aren't corrected but allowed to become part of the composition.
The results are difficult to pin down. Minimalism can suddenly give way to psychedelia, a delicate melody can become strangely unsettling, and a seemingly peaceful soundscape may conceal something darker beneath its surface.
